Web-hosting with Angelfire

As you may have seen, Angelfire offers free web-hosting in exchange for showing adverts on your website. To register with AF, go to http://www.angelfire.com,
and register in the usual way. Keep a note of your username and your password.
AF will send you a welcoming email.

Uploading your files using Angelfire   (update on 11/2/11)

When I originally wrote this webpage, I used FTP Commander to post my
files onto the Angelfire site. However I can't get FTP Commander to work for
Angelfire at present , so I'm now using Angelfire's inbuilt FTP service,
which
works just as well.
By the way,  FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol.

To access Angelfire's FTP, log into AF with your username and password.
You will now be on the Control Panel.

In the section headed "Web Shell", click on the blue link: "Manage"

This is a view of the next page you'll see ...

angelfire FTP page

Under file upload, which you'll see heading  the lower quadrant above,
you can browse for one of your files to upload.
Then click on the green
upload button, but if you're overwriting an exisiting file online, check the
box alongside, before uploading.

Click on the button marked as "Upload multiple files", if you wish to do
so. To delete an existing online file, select it from the list in the yellow
quadrant above it, and then under "Edit files", click on the green Delete
button.

To visit your website, you can do so by clicking on the blue link in the
Quick Account Information ... brilliant!

Your new website address at Angelfire will be ....
           http://myusername
.angelfire.com

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

FTP Commander
... this section is appropriate for uploading
your files to the internet, to web-hosting services other than Angelfire
.

I've made several attempts to use the Publisher facility on Kompozer, without
success.
So I've used the free version of FTP Commander (FTPCom) instead.

You can download FTPCom from this link ....  http://tiny.cc/uh9C4

Basically, you'll need some way of positng your files off to the internet, so you'll
need a program like FTPCom to do this for you. (FTP = File Transfer Protocol).

As regards setting up FTP Commander ...

Click on the Desktop icon to open it
Click on New Server .. and fill in the properties box in a similar way to this ...

ftpcomm
Click on this image to see a larger version of it.
(to create a link like this, click on the photo, select LINK, & then browse through
"files for type" for "image files", to find your larger photo ~ put both pics in your main folder).

The "Name" you chose isn't important as regards uploading files to the internet.
The "FTP Server" is the postal address for web-hosting service. The latter will
have emailed this information to you when you first registered with it. If you can't find
it, contact the service via its contact info on its website ... the FTP address might be
there to see on its website (see Help / FAQ or similar).

Press "Save" when you're ready.

Click on the name of the server that you're using and wait a few seconds for
it to open up. When using some web-hosting sites, you might have to click
on "public_html" when it appears (and upload your stuff into this area).

On the FTPCom screen when you get it up, you'll see three main columns,
(see the image below).
On your left hand side are the files stored on your computer.
Browse through the extreme left hand column to find your web files .. the
images and the text files which you wish to upload to the internet. Click on
your web folder when you find it, and all the contents will pop up in the
adjacent left hand column...

Click on this image to see a larger version of it.

On the right hand side is what is up on the internet.

To upload a file onto the internet, click on the file to highlight it in blue, and
then
click on the centre arrow to upload it. I usually upload my images first,
followed by
the index.html file, and then the other files, but this sequence
may not be important.

If you wish to re-upload a file a bit later, after say fixing a missing link,
click once on the yellow folder icon at the top of the extreme left hand
side column, and then
re-locate your files again. When uploading the
changed file, FPTCom will ask you
if you wish to overwrite the exisitng
file on the internet. Click OK to this.

To delete a file or image actually on the internet, click on the item on the
right
hand side, to highlight it in blue, and then click on the DELETE button
above it.
(I haven't seen a way of doing this with Kompozer's Publisher facility, but no
doubt
there is a way of doing so).

Go online, and have a good look at your new website.
If you see it, then my congratulations to you.

If there are any changes you'd like to make, go back to the relevant page in
Kompozer, change the page, save it as a .htm/.html file, and then re-upload
the page to your webhosting service with FTPCom / Angelfire's FTP service.

Frequent problems I've had include links that don't work, and misssing photos.
You will have to have a play with Kompozer and FTPCom, to change your files
and re-upload them.

Ask a friend to check your new website for visual appeal, typos, links that
don't work, and missing photos. Your website can look quite different on
someone else's computer.
