Setting up a website on Weebly.com & 110mb.com

Have a look at this excellent YouTube video, first of all, on how to set up a
website on Weebly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&v=LwRLe6QElvI

Please note that what you'll see on this video might not quite be the same as what
you'll see on Weebly at present, as Weebly has been updated.

If you'd like to see a full screen version of the video above,  click on the little TV shaped
icon next to the HQ button, to enlarge the picture. To exit, press the Escape button on
your keyboard.

As some of you will know, I've set up a website for Nottinghamshire U3A
Network on Weebly, and subsequently bought a domain name via Weebly
with Register dot com.

This removed the Weebly name from our website address (aka URL).
I think that access to our website has improved, with our new URL.
Previously, I found that access to Weebly was very difficult in the evenings.

I've found that creating a webpage on Weebly is slow, compared with
Webs.com or 110MB.com.  It can take 30 - 60 seconds for Weebly to
respond to each addition or change I make to a webpage.  I don't know
why this is so. You might have a different experience if you have a better
computer & a faster internet connection.

When using the Paragraph element to add a paragraph of text to your
webpage, keep to just one paragraph of text per element. I created all my
text (including the links on my Links webpage) on a Word document, and
then copied and pasted each paragraph of text into a Weebly webpage.

To copy, use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + the letter C.
To paste, use Ctrl + the letter V.

When you've finished a webpage, click on the "PUBLISH" button at the
top of the page. Do this before you go on to your next page, and also
after any alteration you make to a page at a later date. You will notice
that on pressing the Publish button, a pop-up menu will appear, inviting
you to buy a domain name with Weebly.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the simplicity of the software and the
professional-looking result with using Weebly. As regards the basic
free package I used to start with, you're only allowed 5MB in content,
so if you wish to display a lot of photos, you might have to put either very
small photos onto your site, or set  a link to an external photo-gallery, such
as Flickr.

Another brilliant thing about Weebly's basic package is that it's free of
advertising.

..................................................................................................

Two years ago, I set up a website on http://110mb.com, which I found a
lot easier to use than Weebly. Like Weebly, the site carried no adverts.
The website name was ...
http://jwebdesigns.110mb.com   but it is now
defunct, presumably because I hadn't updated the site in over 2 years.

The main downside of using this site, was that I had to chose a short name
for the website (JWeb Designs), to be able to fit in 6 webpage titles on the
black nav bar at the top of the website. The page titles had to be short as
well, to fit all of them in. I copied and pasted in the text from text
documents, and I noticed it was difficult at times to get the formatting of
the text throughout the webpage looking uniform. Otherwise I think
110.MB offers a great service.

I hope you will feel inspired to have a go at setting up your own website.
You could use services like these to set up a provisional website for
yourself or for your organisation, before you branch out into creating one
using WordPress.
